Palawano Wood Art

Description

Palawano is a powerful wooden sculpture that pays tribute to the Palaw’an indigenous group of Palawan. Carved from Ipil, Narra, and Kamagong, the piece features stylized trees rising from a rugged base, with human figures nestled below in a huddled formation. Each element of the sculpture is uniquely textured, highlighting the natural grains and tones of the wood, from the warm golden hues of Narra to the deep, commanding presence of Kamagong.

The piece embodies the deep connection between the Palaw’an people and their environment, symbolizing unity, resilience, and the nurturing bond between humanity and nature. Palawano is not just a visual representation of cultural heritage; it is also an invitation to reflect on the importance of preserving indigenous traditions and the ecosystems they inhabit.

Espejo ni Pinggoy or Pinggoy Generoso focuses on reclaimed wood and found objects as his main materials. After retiring from broadcasting he found the passion in creating and sculpting anything Filipino as his inspiration.

Palawano was inspired by the profound relationship between the Palaw’an people and their environment—a bond that defines their identity and way of life. I wanted to capture the interplay between humanity and nature through the juxtaposition of the rooted trees and the human forms beneath them.

Palawano is not just an artistic creation but a reminder of the cultural and environmental treasures we must strive to protect. It is my homage to the Palaw’an people and their enduring legacy.

1. Use woodwax preferably besswax.
2. Once a month thinly application with dry cloth.
